Happy birthday, Charles Mingus

Phenomenal footage of Mingus famous mid-sixties ensemble, featuring Eric Dolphy on Sax, Bass Clarinet and Flute, Clifford Jordan on Tenor Sax, Jaki Byard on Piano, Dannie Richmond on Drums and Johnny Coles on Trumpet. Note Dolphy’s bass clarinet solo on Take The A-Train, or the fluid explorations on Meditations On Integration.

Also, I haven’t read his autobiography, Beneath The Underdog, since high school, but Mingus is not afraid to accord himself mythic status in his tales. I remember one particular story involving a string of Mexican prostitutes that will wreck your mind. Discover the mindset behind the music.
