Happy birthday to Marillion’s singer, Fish

While wildly popular in Europe, the Peter Gabriel era Genesis inspired Prog Rock sounds of Marillion, only cracked the American Billboard Top 100, once. That track, Kayleigh, while still very much in the style of Marillion, managed to keep the track length to a radio friendly four minutes with a memorable, commercial melody and hook. I hadn’t heard this song in years, until, when discussing the eighties era of Prog bands with a friend, we decided to give it a listen, as you never randomly hear it on American radio. I was amazed at how well I remembered the song, down to the lyrics. In 1985, I thought Kayleigh was too pop, preferring their debut Script For A Jester’s Tear (god, what a ridiculous title) and it’s more sprawling epics, but since, with nostalgia, I found that I’ve grown quite fond of it.
