Happy birthday, Lou Harrison

The work of American composer, Lou Harrison, is a hypnotic combination of Asian influence, found and self-made instruments, Western classical theory and a continuation of the ideas of Henry Cowell and Harry Partch. I’ve always had a fondness for the gamelan, and Harrison’s work with this Indonesian percussive ensemble adds elements, such as string accompaniment, creating a beautiful and unique hybrid of East and West.
