Okay, admittedly, I’ve only watched two episodes of Sense8 so far, and though I intend to continue, regardless of whether it gets better, they are not making it easy. The vast majority of the acting is sub-par, the characters and their relationships are cartoonish stereotypes, not to mention the fact that apparently the Wachowski’s lack any trace of subtlety. From the intro, which looks like international stock footage for the purpose of screaming, “Hey! Look at us! We filmed all over the globe and therefore are a big deal!”, to the post-coital dropping of a wet dildo, as if the audience was confused by the lesbian sex scene that they just watched, with heterosexual couples wondering, “Gerald, what are they doing?! Women parts don’t work like that!”. The thing is that the Wachowski’s always seem to have some sort of pretense as to the depth of their work, and when you’re being beaten over the head with ideas/images that are painfully obvious to begin with, you have no claim to any depth, you’re pre-assuming your audiences cognitive inability at best, and at worst, pandering to idiots.
Normally I would reserve commentary until further viewing, but the io9 piece immediately pissed me off. To state that this is “the Philip K. Dick adaptation we always wanted” is both an affront to the prescient genius of Philip K Dick, and fans of Sci-Fi in general. While, I’ve yet to get far enough into the series to see the larger parallels, the Wachowski’s have done little to prove themselves more than a one trick pony, with nothing approaching the vast world of ideas discussed over nearly thirty years, in Dick’s writing. Even if the show gets better, the Wachowski’s will forever be incapable of delivering the ultimate Philip K Dick adaptation. Sorry, folks, that’s just the facts.
