Panasonic is bringing back Technics turntables. Am I the only one who thinks this new prototype looks like absolute shit?

new technics turntable

It looks like an industrial meat slicer mixed with aluminum siding from a cheap shed. Seriously, I HATE this design, and it’s not just because of my allegiance to the 1200 (of which I own 5). I’m sure the specs are good but wtf is up with this lame ass modern design? Instead of cold dropping cuts, you’re slicing cold cuts. I’ll have the pastrami and swiss on rye. Hopefully it goes through some serious revisions between this prototype, and production.

  1. I finally grabbed a moment to read the article.

So I guess this is a super high-end model. We have a couple of Panasonics around that are good consumer TTs and cost, no doubt, a pantload less than this one will. I think there comes a point where, say, 90+% of perfection is eno0ugh for most ears, including those blown by lots of previously “intaken” volume. To wit, we used 1200s at several radio stations I worked in, often mounted on wooden pedestals filled with sand for damping out feedback. Also (too) often, we’d take advantage of the damping and crank the studio monitors waaaaaaaaaay up to just below distortion, and seldom if ever got any appreciable feedback (except in the fade-out sections of some records).
